Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
by R.A. Salvatore

Although I am not a huge fan of books that have been adopted from movies, I was please with Salvatore’s work for the newest title, Attack of the Clones. Building upon the movie, the book offers more insight to the development of the characters and the subplots not presented in the theatrical release.

Obviously, with the novel literally reiterating the events from the movie (like any good script), I was pleased to see that the folks from Lucasfilms gave Salvatore a little more freedom that I originally thought they would. The author presents a good deal of background of each of the characters along with more detail concerning some of the subplots involved. For example, in the movie, we are presented with a good deal of Anakin’s anguish over his feeling toward Padmé. What I found interesting from the book (spoiler warning) was the way Salvatore presented more background concerning Padmé’s feelings not just to Anakin, but in her quiet reflection on how much she was missing from her personal life as a former Queen and her continued service as a senator for Naboo.

The author chose an interesting series of events in which Padmé dealt with this issue. Most notably, there are several meetings with her family in which present a good deal of conflict over this issue of relationships, or in this case, her lack of one. This, among several other subplots, helped to enhance the issues and events raised in the book by allowing the reader to grasp a greater insight as to why the characters react the way they do in the movie. For the faithful, the author also presented a good deal of material of Shmi Skywalker and the very young Boba Fett that is worth reading.

The one nice thing about the book’s adaptation was that it presented material for the Star War fans that the movie cannot touch upon. Not for lack of effort, but even with Lucas’ flair for special effects, the book allowed the reader to savor the story at their own leisure without having to worry about the motion picture’s time constraints.

If you do not have the chance to see the movie, which I am sure most dedicated fans already have, then the book will give the fans a great presentation of the story along with some great background material to enjoy.
