Knights of the Dinner Table
by
Jolly R. Blackburn & the KODT Crew

What can I say about Knights of the Dinner Table (KoDT)?  I’ve become addicted to this comic, counting the days each month until the new issue is released.  It all started when my husband showed me a comic strip in one of his gaming magazines.  I can’t remember exactly what the strip was about but I remember I laughed my butt off.  A visit to the comic book store revealed the strip was also a monthly magazine and the rest is history.

Just who are the Knights?  The Knights of the Dinner Table is a game group made up of five people who get together on a weekly basis to play their favorite role-playing game, Hackmaster.  While they do play other games from time to time, there’s nothing the players enjoy more then a little “hack and slash”.

B.A. Felton is the GM of the group.  His rules/calls as GM are constantly tested and challenged by the other players so his games have to be rule-tight or there is hell to pay.  Then there’s Bob Herzog.  Bob terrorizes monsters, NPC’s, heck, just about everyone, with his crossbow.  Dave Bozwell does the same with his sword, the Hackmaster +12 (kind of reminds me of a sword my first D&D character found, the Moonblade, d12+8.  That sword could hack through orcs like they were made of butter…I digress).   Sara Felton is B.A.’s cousin and the only female member of the group.  She struggles each week to bring more role-playing to the games and less fighting.  Brian Van Hoose rounds out the group.  Brian is the gaming expert.  He knows the rules for just about every game out there and when B.A. makes the wrong call, Brian is the one who lets him know.  If there’s a loophole in the rules, Brian knows about it and will use it.

Jolly Blackburn is the mastermind behind KoDT and the storylines are based on his actual gaming experiences as well as ideas that have been submitted by readers/fans.   That’s why the stories hit so close to home.  There is a strip in Bundle of Trouble, Volume 2, where the Knights decide to play the board game Risk.  Alliances are made, alliances are broken, tables are thrown…I had major flashbacks of a time I played Risk for the first time with my husband.  He was supposed to take it easy on me and teach me the basics since I had never played before.  All the while he was hording cards under the board that would increase his troops so that my armies were totally outnumbered.  Let’s just say we were finding pieces to this game all over our apartment for months afterwards.  I guess I had it coming when after I captured Argentina from him I broke into, “Don’t cry for me Argentina” for five minutes.

In short, if you get together with any kind of gaming group, you will relate to this comic.  Check it out and be ready for tons of laughs!!!
