by Bruce R. Cordell The Sunless Citadel, written by Bruce R. Cordell, is the first offering by Wizards of the Coast for their new edition of the Dungeons & Dragons game. The adventure was prepared as a kick-off for a beginning Dungeon Master and party to start an adventure using the new rules to guide them through the dungeon. Although the traditional 'dungeon-crawl' would not have been my first choice for an adventure, I was pleasantly surprised by the simplistic yet fully detailed adventure. In the opening contents and from the back of the adventure, the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide and the Monster Manual are recommended to have before you run the adventure. Yet, I was surprised to find that the book gave such a good short description of events, monsters and NPCs (non-player characters) that the latter two books are not needed as much. This adventure was used for my group, and thankfully I did not have to constantly rely on the latter two books while running the game. The adventure is definitely capable of standing out on its own as a campaign. The dungeon is quite detailed and you get to see a variety of different things that should challenge your players appropriately. In addition, it is not strictly a 'hack-n-slash' adventure since there are ample opportunities to parley with many of the NPCs along the way. Nevertheless, if your players are looking for a good adventure that will allow them to use some of the new skills introduced with the coming of this new edition of the game, then you won't have to work too hard in allowing them to do this. The only problem that I had with the adventure is that there are many areas for the players to cover, and that this is not a short campaign in the least. Yet, if you're looking for a campaign to give you some time to work on a storyline of your own while you're learning to run the new edition of the game, then that could be a plus in your favor. For the first adventure introduced in the 3rd edition of D&D, I was happy with the overall result and would highly recommend this for new and old players alike who are interested in starting a new campaign with the new rules. The Sunless Citadel is appropriately challenging, and most importantly, received a good review from my players. A happy group certainly makes the DM's job much easier. --Gary, Wizard's Keep staff |
